London Borough of Newham, 2022. Ecological survey & report for the Greenway, L B Newham

Denis was commissioned by the London Borough of Newham to carry out a preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA) of the Greenway.

The Greenway is a linear site, which transverses the London Borough of Newham from aside the Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park in the north-west to the Beckton Sewage Works in the south-east. The site has a total area of about 9.3ha and a length of just under 7km (a short length of the Greenway extends into Tower Hamlets).

L B Newham wished to bolster the biodiversity value of the Greenway via seeding / planting, identify four key species of insect / wildlife to become the focus of educational nature stop off points. Most of the site was contained within metal fences situated on top of the Bazalgette embankment. Habitats were described following a modified Phase 1 protocol.

The survey:

  • Identified vascular plant species and habitats on site including those which were regional and / or national priorities.

  • Highlighted priority and protected faunal species which were present (or likely to be present) on site.

  • Identified invasive non-native species (INNS) which were present or likely to be present on site.

  • Recommended any further protected species surveys which may be necessary.

  • Identified opportunities to enhance biodiversity.

  • Identified four key species of insect / wildlife to become the focus of educational nature stop off points.
